Training in aesthetics in Brighton and Sussex: a practical guide

Brighton has an unusually strong beauty and wellness sector for a city of its size, and demand for skin treatments across Sussex has grown steadily. That has brought more training options into the area — and a wider range of quality.
This is a guide to choosing well, written from the perspective of a Brighton-based academy. We have an obvious interest here, so we have tried to write the criteria we would want a prospective student to hold us to.
Online theory, in-person practical
The strongest model for most aesthetics training is blended: theory delivered online so you can study around clients and family, and practical training delivered face to face.
Be sceptical of any hands-on treatment taught entirely online. You cannot learn needling depth, peel application, or blade angle from a video. You learn it by doing it under supervision, with someone correcting your hand as you work.
Equally, be sceptical of a one-day course that crams theory and practical into eight hours. Skin science needs time to absorb, and a rushed theory component tends to mean the practical day is spent catching up on knowledge you should have arrived with.
Ask about class size
This is the question that most reliably separates good practical training from poor practical training, and it is the one prospective students ask least often.
On a practical day, the number of students per trainer determines how much individual correction you receive. In a group of ten, you might get a few minutes of direct observation. In a group of two or three, the trainer watches your technique throughout and corrects it before bad habits set.
Ask for the maximum group size, not the average. And ask whether the person named on the website is the person who will actually be teaching you.
Travelling in from across Sussex
Brighton and Hove is well connected for practical training days. Direct rail links run from Worthing, Lewes, Haywards Heath, Eastbourne and Hastings, and London Victoria is around an hour, which makes a single practical day realistic without an overnight stay. Our own academy is on Sackville Road in Hove, a few minutes from Hove station.
If you are travelling any distance, ask about the practical day schedule before booking. A day that starts at ten and finishes by four is achievable as a day trip from most of Sussex, Surrey and south London. One starting at eight is not.
What to look for in a Brighton provider
Beyond accreditation, which we cover separately, these are the practical markers worth checking.
- Is the training delivered by a practising clinician, or by someone who no longer treats clients?
- What is the maximum student-to-trainer ratio on practical days?
- Where does the practical training take place — a working clinic, or a hired room?
- Do you get models to work on, or do students practise on each other?
- Is there support after the course when you have your first difficult client?
- Can you speak to a previous student before you book?
A note on price
Aesthetics training in the South East spans a wide price range, and price alone tells you very little. A cheap course that leaves you uninsurable has cost you everything you paid. An expensive course with fifteen students on the practical day may deliver less contact time than a mid-priced one with three.
Work out the cost per hour of supervised practical contact time. It is a far more revealing number than the headline price, and it is one that good providers are happy to help you calculate.
